Steam demo conversion rate
Demo conversion rate measures the share of demo players who also have the full game on their wishlist: players who played and wishlisted, divided by total demo players, times 100. The metric records overlap. It does not establish whether the player wishlisted before or after playing.
A public Steam Next Fest survey reported a 12% result at the 30th percentile, a 16.33% median, and a 20% result at the 70th percentile. Those numbers create a useful diagnostic:

The dataset covers festival traffic and self-selected respondents. A demo receiving narrower creator or community traffic may convert differently from one exposed to a broad Steam audience.
Genre also changes the result. A co-op demo can attract several friends while one person handles wishlisting and purchase decisions for the group. The measured rate may look low even when the demo creates real demand.
How many unique players is good for a Steam demo?
Valve publishes no universal unique-player benchmark for Steam demos. Total players measure reach, so the result depends heavily on the audience and distribution available to the game.
A studio with a large creator launch, festival placement, or existing community should expect more players than a first-time developer releasing quietly. Comparing totals without that acquisition context says little about demo quality.
The useful internal benchmark starts with qualified traffic. Compare how many store visitors install the demo, how many installers launch it, and how many players reach the core mechanic or intended endpoint. Player growth over time matters too: a demo that keeps gaining unique players after the launch spike may be receiving creator coverage or Steam discovery, while a larger opening followed by an immediate flatline can mean the marketing beat ended without creating continued distribution.
How many concurrent players is good for a Steam demo?
Valve publishes no general concurrent-user threshold for a healthy demo. Peak concurrent users measure how concentrated play becomes at one moment, which makes the metric far more important for some genres than others.
Single-player demos can succeed with modest concurrency when players arrive across different time zones and continue wishlisting. Total unique players, completion, and conversion usually provide more useful signals for those games.
Multiplayer demos need enough concurrent players to create functioning matches. The practical floor depends on party size, regions, server structure, matchmaking rules, and session length. A four-player game split across several regions needs more concurrency than a two-player game with global matchmaking. Studios can test that floor through controlled Playtests before a public demo launch: invite players in scheduled waves, measure queue time and match completion, then increase the population until the experience works without manual coordination.
Steam Next Fest: Top Demos and festival discovery
During Steam Next Fest, Valve publishes a post-event page featuring the 50 demos with the most unique players in that edition. The ranking uses unique demo players, not wishlists, review scores, or peak concurrent users. In a 3,534-game festival, that gives roughly 1.4% of participants a Top Demos position, so the page represents an exceptional reach outcome rather than a realistic baseline for the median entrant. Valve does not publish the player-count cutoff, and the threshold changes with every cohort.
The first days shape who accumulates enough players to contend. Valve initially randomises most festival placements, apart from named lists and personalised areas, and after several days recommendations respond to player behaviour during the event. This creates a compounding effect: early players generate behavioural data, stronger placement brings more players, and those additional plays can strengthen later placement.
Conversion is not the strongest predictor of the final result. The same survey found only a moderate relationship between demo conversion and wishlist gains (r = 0.457); a game's pre-festival audience size and recent wishlist velocity predicted outcomes more reliably.
Read the metrics together and diagnose before adding traffic
Unique players show how much reach the demo earned. Concurrent users show whether that play was concentrated enough to create visible momentum or healthy multiplayer sessions. Demo conversion shows how much of the player audience overlaps with purchase intent. No single number proves the demo is ready: high reach with low conversion points toward audience fit or a mismatch with the store-page promise, while high conversion with low reach means the demo resonates but needs distribution.
A conversion rate below 12% deserves investigation when the sample is large enough and the traffic is relevant. Demo stability is the first gate. Immutable's readiness framework marks a demo green when it can be completed in one sitting without crashes; minor bugs or soft locks move it to yellow; crashes or an incompletable build place it in red. The store page needs the same review, since a low rate can also reflect a misleading capsule, trailer, description, or set of tags that attracted the wrong players.
The broader Steam game marketing strategy places Playtests, public demos, creator outreach, and Steam Next Fest in the correct pre-launch sequence. Each reporting period should record traffic source, unique players, peak concurrency, completion or playtime, overlapping wishlists, and player feedback, so comparable periods turn the game's own history into the strongest benchmark available.
