Pre-festival audience size explains 60% of the outcome
Immutable analysed 16,878 games across seven Steam Next Fest editions. The two strongest predictors of festival performance were the total audience entering the event and its recent growth rate.
Pre-festival audience size alone explained 60% of the variance in outcomes. No other measured factor came close. The audience a game brings into Steam Next Fest therefore shapes both the baseline result and the level of demand Steam can amplify.
Steam Next Fest concentrates visibility around games that convert their early festival traffic. A larger existing audience generates more initial visits, wishlist activity, personalised recommendations, and signals for Steam's discovery systems. The festival multiplies existing momentum, so games that enter without it tend to leave with limited gains.
Outcomes rise with the audience entering the festival
Steam keeps wishlist totals private, so the analysis uses public follower counts to compare games. The industry rule of thumb estimates 9.6 wishlists per follower, making 500 followers equivalent to roughly 4,800 estimated wishlists.
| Pre-fest followers | No. games | P25 | Median | P75 | P90 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0-500 | 14,899 | 4 | 11 | 317 | 250 |
| 500-1K | 849 | 58 | 114 | 221 | 410 |
| 1K-2.5K | 773 | 98 | 200 | 412 | 714 |
| 2.5K-5K | 369 | 197 | 357 | 742 | 1,271 |
| 5K-10K | 236 | 356 | 760 | 1,445 | 2,390 |
| 10K-25K | 141 | 681 | 1,227 | 2,775 | 4,298 |
| 25K-50K | 28 | 853 | 2,332 | 4,771 | 6,026 |
| 50K-100K | 18 | 2,009 | 3,402 | 7,216 | 14,727 |
| 100K+ | 7 | 7,032 | 8,133 | 13,576 | 23,458 |
The clearest early performance break occurs at 500 followers. Games below that point gained a median 11 followers during the festival; games entering with 500 to 1,000 gained a median 114, a 10.4x increase. Median gains then rose at every subsequent audience tier, reaching 8,133 followers for games entering above 100,000.
This makes roughly 5,000 wishlists the first evidence-based readiness target. Valve publishes no hard threshold, and individual games can overperform or underperform their tier. For internal decisions, use the actual wishlist count in Steamworks; use follower-based estimates only when comparing the game with public market data.
Wishlist velocity shows whether the baseline is alive
Total wishlists reveal audience size; recent wishlist velocity reveals whether interest is still growing. A game with 1,000 wishlists accumulated over several years enters differently from one that reached the same total during a recent demo, creator campaign, or store-page push.
Use 10 organic wishlists per day as the healthy velocity threshold. Five to nine per day is borderline, while fewer than five suggests the game lacks enough current momentum. The target is to enter with both an established audience and recent evidence that new players are still responding.
Day 1 provides an early confirmation: in Immutable's seven-cohort analysis, games that gained at least six followers on Day 1 finished with a median total gain of 108, while games that gained none finished with a median of eight.
For a broader Steam Next Fest strategy, assess the demo, store page, creator pipeline, launch timing, and team capacity alongside the wishlist numbers.
Make the entry decision before the festival starts
Run the decision as a short readiness check:
- Count current wishlists. Aim for roughly 5,000, equivalent to about 500 public Steam followers.
- Measure organic wishlist growth over the past two weeks. Aim for at least 10 per day.
- Check whether the demo is completable in one sitting without crashes.
- Confirm that the store page and creator outreach are ready to convert the festival's first wave of traffic.
Enter when the signals are mostly green. If the game is well below 5,000 wishlists, gaining fewer than five organic wishlists per day, or carrying an unstable demo, withdrawing before the festival begins can preserve the opportunity for a later edition.
The goal before Steam Next Fest is to create demand that Steam can amplify. Immutable's Conversion Funnel routes campaign traffic through a branded landing page that captures email and social data alongside the Steam wishlist, then adds quest and referral mechanics for pre-festival audience growth.
