What video game PR includes

For an indie or PC studio, PR can include:

  • announcement outreach;
  • previews;
  • review pitching;
  • developer interviews;
  • exclusive assets;
  • launch coverage;
  • update or milestone stories;
  • event briefings;
  • reactive expert commentary.

Pick the beats worth pitching: a story earns outreach when it fits the journalist's audience and what they have covered recently.

1. Build the press list from relevance

Start with publications and journalists that have covered comparable games. For each contact, record:

  • journalist;
  • outlet;
  • beat;
  • recent relevant article;
  • region;
  • contact method;
  • games or topics covered;
  • last pitch;
  • response;
  • coverage history.

Skip bought mass lists. Muck Rack's 2026 State of Journalism panel notes that unanswered pitches often mean journalists are "unclear on the relevance of your email to them."

2. Segment the list by story

A review pitch and a funding announcement go to different people, so split the list into segments such as:

  • reviewers;
  • PC and Steam news;
  • genre specialists;
  • business press;
  • local press;
  • platform specialists;
  • accessibility writers;
  • technology writers;
  • creators who also publish editorial coverage.

Each journalist should receive only the stories that match their beat.

3. Write the pitch for the journalist

The first email should answer:

  1. What happened?
  2. Why is it relevant now?
  3. Why does it fit this journalist?
  4. What can they access?
  5. What is the next step?

Muck Rack's 2026 survey of nearly 1,100 journalists found that 69% prefer pitches under 200 words.

The survey covers journalism in general, so treat the 200-word figure as a guide to concision for games press; it predicts no specific response rate.

4. Give the pitch a real news hook

A pitch needs a specific, verifiable reason to cover the game now, such as:

  • announcement;
  • release date;
  • demo;
  • major update;
  • unusual development story;
  • relevant industry data;
  • interview access;
  • exclusive asset;
  • event availability.

Keep every hook true; manufactured urgency costs you credibility with a journalist you will want to pitch again.

5. Embargoes still have a place

An embargo is an agreement that coverage will not publish before a stated time; use one when early access helps journalists prepare, and skip it for routine news.

In Cision's 2026 State of the Media report, 45% of journalists named embargoed or early-access information among the materials they want from PR teams.

For each embargoed pitch, state:

  • exact embargo date;
  • exact time;
  • timezone;
  • what material is embargoed;
  • whether streaming and screenshots are covered;
  • who to contact with questions.

Confirm each embargo in writing, because a journalist who never replied has not agreed to it.

6. Handle review keys differently from streamer keys

Press and streamers can receive keys through the same Steamworks tools, but a reviewer's key comes with embargo and review terms attached.

Valve provides Steam Keys free for press and influencers; Release State Override keys, for pre-release access, are "intended for small beta tests and press/influencer access."

Valve generally limits Release State Override keys to 2,500 in total, so record every one in a press-key log with:

  • outlet;
  • journalist;
  • key;
  • date sent;
  • build or branch;
  • embargo;
  • activation status where available;
  • review status;
  • follow-up date.

Send each journalist an individual key so every activation traces to one outlet, and never make review access conditional on a positive score.

7. Build a press kit that removes work

A press kit lets a journalist pull accurate material without emailing you. Rami Ismail of Vlambeer built presskit() so developers could publish press pages with "everything the press needs."

A practical game press kit should include:

  • one-sentence description;
  • longer description;
  • fact sheet;
  • release date or status;
  • platforms;
  • pricing, if announced;
  • developer information;
  • screenshots;
  • logos;
  • key art;
  • trailer links;
  • contact details;
  • credits;
  • relevant links.

Keep assets high resolution and clearly labelled, and use the full indie game press kit guide as a checklist.

8. Follow up without restarting the pitch

Experts on Muck Rack's 2026 State of Journalism panel agreed that when a story is genuinely relevant, you should follow up: "Be respectful, but be resilient."

Each follow-up should carry one new item the journalist can use:

  • review key;
  • new trailer;
  • updated build;
  • confirmed interview;
  • release date;
  • fresh data;
  • event availability.

9. Measure PR beyond clip count

A clip count measures how much was published; tracking referral traffic, signups and Steam actions per article shows which coverage moved players. Track at least:

  • outlet;
  • article URL;
  • publication date;
  • story type;
  • sentiment where useful;
  • referral traffic;
  • tracked landing-page actions;
  • email signups;
  • Steam actions where attributable;
  • downstream purchase or activation where measurable.

Use the same definitions across outlets so one large publication does not distort the entire report.

An owned audience keeps PR-driven visitors reachable: Immutable's audience platform captures emails, socials and Steam wishlists from game pages and unifies them into player profiles.

A simple PR operating cadence

Before the beat

  1. Finalise the story.
  2. Build the relevant list.
  3. Prepare assets.
  4. Prepare keys if needed.
  5. Set embargo rules if needed.
  6. Create tracked links.
  7. Assign one owner.

During outreach

  1. Send personalised pitches.
  2. Log responses.
  3. Fulfil key requests.
  4. Answer questions quickly.
  5. Track accepted embargoes explicitly.

After publication

  1. Save coverage.
  2. Measure referral activity.
  3. Thank the journalist when appropriate.
  4. Correct factual errors politely.
  5. Record what earned responses for the next beat.
