First, separate impressions from visits
An impression means Steam displayed your game in a recorded placement. A visit means someone clicked through to the store page. Low visits can come from two different failures:
- Low impressions: Steam is not showing the game often.
- Normal impressions, low visits: people see the capsule but do not click.
Do not solve the second problem with an algorithm diagnosis or the first with store-description rewrites. Open Steamworks, click Marketing & Visibility on the product landing page, then open the Store & Steam Platform Traffic Breakdown tab. Compare impressions and visits placement by placement.
Diagnose by launch stage
| Stage | Surfaces to check | Likely constraint |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-launch | Popular Upcoming, tag and recommendation views | No guaranteed baseline placement; inaccurate tags or insufficient relative interest |
| Full launch | New Releases Queue, All New Releases, New & Trending, recommendations | Eligibility filters, weak player response or intense release-window competition |
| Early Access | The "All New Releases" tab in the Early Access section, recommendations, New & Trending on the Early Access page, top sellers | Purchases, play, reviews and audience fit after initial exposure |
| Post-launch | Recommendations, tag pages, top sellers, Update Visibility Rounds | No major sales/play signal, or no eligible promotion active |
An eligibility filter is a rule that removes your game from a placement before any ranking happens.
Valve names two grounds: a title can be filtered out of a given player's queue because of the tags attached to it, depending on that player's own preferences, or because of the type of product it is.
At full release, the New Releases Queue gives every title a baseline, though these same filters can still remove it for individual players. Pre-launch does not carry the same universal queue promise.
Check the inputs Valve names
Valve's public guidance is unusually clear:
- Players and purchases are strong signals.
- Tags affect who a game is considered relevant to and where it can appear. Valve says the top 20 determine the tag pages and browse views a game can appear on, and that some store filters prioritize the first 15.
- Wishlists are mostly not a visibility factor. Valve names the Popular Upcoming tab as its one example of an exception, and does not publish a fuller list.
- Raw store-page traffic is not a visibility factor.
- Store-page conversion rate is not a visibility factor.
- Review score is not a factor while the game sits at Mixed or above, which Valve defines as 40% positive or higher. Below 40%, in Mostly Negative, Valve says the game becomes less likely to be featured.
This means a traffic spike is not a direct lever. It only helps visibility indirectly if it produces the player response Steam values.
The repair order
- Confirm the app and store page are in the stage required by the placement.
- Check the Store & Steam Platform Traffic Breakdown for the exact placements producing zero or few impressions.
- Re-run the Tag Wizard (the tagging tool in your Steamworks store admin) and put accurate, specific tags first.
- If impressions exist but clicks do not, test the capsule rather than blaming reach.
- If clicks exist but purchases do not, diagnose the game proposition and page separately.
- Build external demand to reach buyers, not as a direct "algorithm boost": a festival slot, a creator covering the demo, a mailing list you own. You would know it worked if visits from external sources in your traffic report and your purchases both rise, whatever total impressions do.
- Re-check the same report after a meaningful event, avoiding daily conclusions from tiny samples.
Use the Steam Capsule Analyzer for the impressions-to-visits problem, and keep your store tags accurate so Steam matches the game to the right browse and recommendation surfaces. The Steam discovery algorithm guide explains the full surface map.
This page covers the first step only: impressions to visits. If Steam is showing your game and people are clicking but the visit does not become a wishlist, that is a different failure with a different fix, covered in why your Steam page is not converting.
