A capsule is one of the fixed-size images Steam uses to represent your game across the store and library. The library capsule and the store's vertical capsule are separate assets.
The library capsule is 600 × 900 (2:3), the store vertical capsule is 748 × 896 (closer to 5:6), and the library one appears only after a player has added the game to their account. Keep separate exports and names in the delivery folder.
Design for recognition after acquisition
A store capsule persuades someone to click. A library capsule helps an owner find and recognize the game among many titles. Preserve the same title treatment, colour signature and key character used in acquisition creative so the handoff feels immediate.
The 300 × 450 generated version is the one to test against. Valve auto-generates it from the 600 × 900 upload, and it is the file Steam serves in dense grid views. If the face, icon or title becomes muddy at half size, simplify the source.
Valve asks for artwork that immediately tells the customer something important about the product and a logo that remains legible against the background.
Design checklist
- Build at 600 × 900 using Valve's library asset template pack.
- Preview at both 600 × 900 and Steam's generated 300 × 450 size.
- Make the title recognizable without reading any supporting copy.
- Keep one clear character, object or symbol as the visual anchor.
- Use the campaign's established colour and typography system.
- Remove quotes, review scores and every line of text beyond the game logo and an appropriate subtitle.
- Check the capsule inside a dense library grid.
For the store capsules and the six dimensions applied across all of them, see the guide to Steam capsule art.
The rest of the library set is uploaded separately from the store capsules: a 920 × 430 library header, a 3840 × 1240 hero graphic and a logo, none of which appear until your store page is published.
Common library-capsule mistakes
- Uploading the 748 × 896 store vertical capsule into the 600 × 900 library slot.
- Optimizing for novelty instead of recognition, so the library art shares no anchor (character, symbol, logo treatment or palette) with the store capsules the buyer already saw.
- Testing only at full resolution and missing a weak 300 × 450 reduction.
- Including review quotes or promotional copy in a permanent library asset.
