TL;DR

Web3 gaming has come a long way since its desktop-only days. Today, mobile platforms dominate the gaming landscape, accounting for about 70% of the overall gaming market.

At Immutable, we've been at the forefront of this shift, rapidly expanding our presence in the mobile web3 gaming space. But how did we get to this point where web3 gaming is thriving on mobile devices?

Let's take a journey through the evolution of mobile web3 gaming.

The early days: Desktop dominance and mobile uncertainty

When web3 gaming first emerged, it was primarily a desktop affair. Games like CryptoKitties and our own Gods Unchained were designed for browser-based play, leveraging the familiar MetaMask wallet experience.

However, even in these early stages, we at Immutable were already thinking about the mobile gaming experience. We recognized the massive potential of the mobile market and began researching how to create a compliant and player-friendly platform for mobile web3 games.

The Wild West of mobile web3 gaming

As developers began exploring mobile web3 gaming, they faced significant challenges. App store policies were unclear, and there was great uncertainty about how to implement blockchain features within the mobile ecosystem.

Some early pioneers attempted to circumvent app store restrictions. Games like Stepn and Axie Infinity initially launched mobile versions that operated outside official app store guidelines. Some developers even used TestFlight, Apple's beta testing platform, to distribute full games without going through the standard approval process.

At Immutable, we closely monitored these developments. Rather than rushing to market with non-compliant solutions, we focused on building a foundation that would stand the test of time and scrutiny.

The inflection point: App stores embrace web3

The landscape changed dramatically when major app stores updated their policies to provide clearer guidelines for web3 games.

Google Play made a significant move on July 12, 2023, announcing that it would allow blockchain-based apps and games, including those using NFTs. This policy went into full effect on December 7, 2023.

While Apple has taken a more cautious approach, they too have opened the door to web3 gaming, albeit with stricter guidelines. Apple now allows NFTs to be included in apps, but requires them to be sold through in-app purchases with a 30% commission.

These policy changes marked a turning point for the industry, providing a clear framework for developers to work within.

Immutable helps you build App Store compliant and player-friendly web3 games

As the regulatory landscape evolved, Immutable was well-positioned to capitalize on the opportunity. We had already been developing solutions to address the key challenges of mobile web3 gaming:

1. Wallet integration: Our Immutable Passport provides a seamless, in-app wallet solution that eliminates the need for players to juggle multiple apps.

2. App Store Requirements: We've worked diligently to ensure our platform and games adhere to App Store guidelines, providing a safe and compliant environment for both developers and players.

3. Player experience: By abstracting away much of the complexity of blockchain interactions, we've created a player experience that feels native to mobile gaming.

Our efforts have paid off, with successful launches of mobile web3 games like Guild of Guardians and Gods Unchained. These titles demonstrate that it's possible to create engaging, compliant web3 experiences on mobile platforms.

The future of mobile web3 gaming

Today, the majority of new web3 games are being developed with mobile in mind. This shift reflects the broader gaming market and the growing acceptance of blockchain technology in the mobile space.

At Immutable, we're continuing to push the boundaries of what's possible on mobile. Our platform offers a comprehensive solution for both web3 native developers and traditional game studios looking to enter the blockchain space. With Immutable, developers can focus on creating great games, while we handle the complexities of blockchain integration, App store compliance, and player experience.

As mobile becomes the primary battleground for web3 gaming adoption, Immutable is here to help you navigate this exciting frontier. Join us in building the next generation of games that will redefine the industry and deliver unprecedented value to gamers worldwide.
